Half the birthday parties Gary books happen outside. Kansas City yards, HOA greens, patio pavers, that one shady corner by the garage. A backyard show works great if you plan three things: shade, space, and a rain idea.
Why backyard parties fit a kids magician
Kids already have room to sit in a big semi-circle. Parents can stand in the back without blocking sight lines. The birthday kid gets that "this is MY yard" energy, which Gary leans into hard.
He still needs roughly 10x10 feet clear of toys, grills, and the dog's favorite ball.
Shade and sight lines
Afternoon sun in July turns a magic show into a squint contest. Pick a shaded stretch, a covered patio, or a spot where the sun is behind the audience. Kids need to see faces and props, not stare into glare.
If your yard is all sun, a pop-up canopy over the performance area (not over the kids' heads as a cave) helps.
Power outside
Gary needs one standard outlet. An outdoor GFCI or an extension cord run cleanly along a wall is fine. Tape or tuck cords so nobody invents a new Olympic sport mid-show.
Neighbors, HOAs, and volume
The show is lively. It is not a nightclub. Still, if your HOA has quiet hours or you share a fence with someone who treats lawn care like a religion, a heads-up is polite. Gary does not need a stage. He does need kids who can hear him over a leaf blower if one starts up.
Weather plan (do this before Saturday)
